honeydew 'til its gone

In the great fruit debate and the even more fractious caucus of melons, one humble flavor continues to impress in stride with his louder and (more) genetically-altered peers. I’m talking about you honeydew. Consistently a smooth enough player for ensemble work, but with a strong enough voice for a solo career, you-oo-oo-oo are the first to leave my fruit cup evermore.

In the song “Fresh As I’m Is” Bow Wow boasts, “I got comeback power like Rogaine.” Though the song is over a year old, the line continues to amuse me to no end. First, the idea that an artist under the age of 20 could consider himself in the midst of a comeback is brilliance itself. Second, I always enjoy listening to people who pronounce the word “man” in such a way that it rhymes with words like “Rogaine.” Third, the bizarre symmetry of Bow Wow — 18 at the time — referring to a product designed to resuscitate the follicles of men far past their primes brings a smile to my lips every time.

I’d like to think that most of us have access to that kind of power — and not just on the shelves of the local pharmacy — but then only so few can be so-so def.

Here’s something from the lab. I wanted to put together some of my favorite pics from a year of blogging, but in the end I still had to skip a few good ones.

The guy in the chicken suit was friends with all the guys who worked in the burger joint. “You actually got into the bar?” one of them gushed when he spoke of his exploits in the next door tavern. They gathered for a couple of stories. A minute later he had the chicken hat back on, headed for the streets.

The guy waiting for the train next to me was of the attention-grabbing, camera-shy ilk that one encounters underground from time to time.
