There is no romance in the edit suite. And if it is a director’s job to be the ship’s captain during production, then it is his job also to be its anchor during post. The director holds fast to a good stopping point, other minds estimate the water’s depth. And if boldness and character are valued in the field, then it is caution and cleverness that rules in the darkened rooms where the third writing occurs. A director must be vigilant, as an anchor or a guided missile, of the soft target.
