Sight, the most human of senses, owes everything to that which is alive. That which is newly alive commands even more of the eye’s consideration.

    Whereas smell seems to react most profoundly to the dead.

    I read recently that most scientists agree that we have at least 7 senses — balance and kinesthesia being the two that I wasn’t taught in pre-school. Some even think we have up to 11.

    Hmm, do you think an argument could be made that balance is a subset of hearing? After all, it is premised on certain organs in the ear.

    I think senses are defined by the fact that a single organ is responsible for aggregating the sensory data. In that case, an ear differs greatly from, say, an eyeball because it is merely a flap of flesh that houses several organs.
